Volunteering
Linlithgow Museum is in the heart of the ancient and Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, and future birthplace of Scotty from Star Trek! We are committed to preserving and sharing Linlithgow’s amazing history and continue to expand our collection with stories of its people, the town and surrounding area through wonderful objects, capturing oral histories and curating fascinating exhibitions.
By becoming a volunteer, you can share your passion for Linlithgow’s history with its local community and visitors from around the world. We have several exciting volunteer opportunities available:
Gallery Steward
As a Steward, you will:
Welcome and assist visitors to the museum
Inform them of any new exhibitions
Answer any questions they may ave
Help record visitor information
Promote and sell products in our small shop
Help signpost other attractions in town
If you are enthusiastic, friendly, have excellent communication skills, and are eager to learn, this is the role for you.
Education Volunteer
We are refreshing our schools and learning programme with our ‘History in a Box - Let’s Explore’ initiative, providing an excellent opportunity to become on of our Education Volunteers. As an Education Volunteer, you will:
Learn to deliver object handling sessions and workshops for schools and other organisations
Welcome and host school visits to the museum
Help deliver our outreach programme (may require short journeys) delivering workshops and object handling sessions
Help maintain our object handling boxes
Support fellow volunteers with sessions
Help local children learn the history of the town in an engaging and fun way
If you are willing to understand and inspire children, are able to deal with busy situations, keep to workshop delivery schedules and have a willingness to participate, be flexible and reliable, then this is the role for you. A driver’s licence will be helpful and a PVG check may be required.
Activities Volunteer
We hold regular activities for children to learn about the museum, our exhibitions, the town and the people or simply, just for fun! As an Activities Volunteer, you will:
Help deliver activities to engage children over the weekend or during school holidays, these can be scavenger hunts to crafting, quizzes to competitions, and more
Help at organised events for children such as LEGO builds, storytelling, crafting sessions etc
Assist in the creation and development of such activities
Experience of working with children and developing similar activities will be beneficial. A PVG check may be required.
Collections Volunteer
We have over 2000 objects in our care, some of which reside in our museum store. As a Collections Volunteer, you will assist the Museum Curator:
Add new items
Label and package objects safely and securely
Assist with the digitising of our objects
Ensure the database is up-to-date
Help set up exhibitions
Carry out basic object cleaning, particularly those in our galleries
If you are fascinated with history and want to contribute to the collection and care of Linlithgow’s heritage, this is the role for you.
Content Creator/Storyteller
With over 2000 objects in our care and with Linlithgow’s rich history and heritage, we have many stories to tell about these objects, the people, the town and surrounding area. As a Content Creator/Storyteller, you will:
Assist the Museum Co-ordinator create content for the website, social media channels, newsletters and more, through research and crafting stories about Linlithgow’s history, its people and our artefacts
Help the Museum Co-ordinator develop short, informative, videos telling Linlithgow’s stories
Provide information for our Gallery Stewards to help answer questions from visitors
If you enjoy history, research, writing and storytelling, this is the role for you.
Reminiscence Volunteer
We are looking for volunteers to join our reminiscence team and engage with residents of local care and residential homes and other relevant organisations or groups. Our goal is to create positive experiences for local people living with dementia or simply want to revisit old memories. Through objects, images and music, you will encourage participants to share their memories and stories. As a Reminiscence Volunteer, you will:
Host reminiscence sessions in the Museum’s Community Space
Participate in outreach sessions visiting care and residential homes, and other organisations or groups relevant to the delivery of reminiscence sessions
Help develop and deliver a range of reminiscence activities, arranging the loan of a reminiscence box from our colleagues at the West Lothian Council Museums Service & Archive, and helping creating additional reminiscence boxes using topic material from our collection or other sources
Assist with the recording of oral histories, if participants are willing to share their stories as part of the museum’s collection.
If you have good social skills, a friendly manner and have an interest in engaging with the elderly or those with dementia, this is the role for you. A driver’s licence would be helpful and a PVG check may be required.
Friend of Linlithgow Museum
If you don’t have time to volunteer with us on a regular basis, you can join the Friends of Linlithgow Museum network who help us out at individual events, openings, fundraising activities or help with a particular project.

All you need for any of the above roles is enthusiasm, a passion for the history of Linlithgow, a willingness to help out your community, and enjoy working as part of a team. Minimal or no experience is required, as full training will be provided.
In return, you will make new friends, learn new skills, enjoy exclusive access to events and exhibitions, and have some fun.
